Blackthorn
‘Blackthorn’ is the first in a series of solar plate etchings focusing on the hedgerow. The portrait format reflects the idea that each print will be a portrait of a plant or tree. The Prussian blue gives the unintentional appearance of a cyanotype.
Hedgerow also reflects my interest in environmental issues: the way that hedgerows were ripped out in the 1950s to make way for intensive farming which subsequently led to loss of habitat and biodiversity. As a climate activist I have been involved with events and discussions concerned with the negative impact of climate breakdown. However, my intension wherever I can is to focus on the positive. To discover hedgerows and photograph them in all their splendour.
