The Anthropocene describes the time during which humans have had a substantial impact on our planet. Although there have been mass extinction events in the earth’s history, where vast swaithes of life have been wiped out, until now they have been triggered by natural causes like asteroids and volcanic eruptions. This is the first time a single species has caused such destructive effects on the natural world.
